The City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, participated in the Rural Connections program and was determined to spread broadband access over as much of their territory as possible. Mayor Ric McGee believes that broadband is a critical element for economic development in rural communities as it is a central means of communicating for sales, supplies and business transactions. Mayor McGee also discusses the benefit of broadband for the city in connecting many of its own locations such as water and sewer facilities and libraries.
